An ATAR requires 10 units. Add more subjects any time; only your entered subjects are sent for calculation.

Understand your estimate

What happens between your school rank and your ATAR?

Your HSC mark and your ATAR are two different steps. Here is the useful version — with your own subjects plotted when you calculate.

1 · Your HSC mark

Rank matters. So does your exam.

For most HSC courses, your reported mark combines your aligned exam mark and your moderated school assessment mark equally.

The simple formula

(85 assessment + 80 exam) ÷ 2

= 82.5 HSC mark

A simplified first-place example

Assessment rank

1st

You finish first internally

Cohort exam result

85

Highest exam mark at school

Your exam mark

80

This result stays yours

Final HSC mark

82.5

The two halves averaged

This is a simplified example. NESA moderates the whole school assessment distribution while preserving the school’s rank order — it does not simply swap every student’s mark one-for-one.

2 · Scaling explorer

Doing better changes the scaling story.

Scaling compares course candidatures, but it is not a fixed bonus or penalty. The strongest strategy is still to choose suitable subjects and earn the highest marks you can.

Add your subjects and marks above. We will plot their historical scaling curves and show where each result sits.

Historical illustration only. UAC recalculates scaling each year and does not report individual scaled marks.
